I offer Cognitive Hypnotherapy for panic attacks in Godalming, Surrey, helping clients understand the underlying causes of panic and gently restore calm, control and confidence.

When Panic Attacks Begin to Take Over

Panic attacks can feel frightening, overwhelming and completely out of your control. The sudden rush of intense physical sensations – racing heart, dizziness, breathlessness or a feeling of losing control – can leave you feeling vulnerable and exhausted.

For many people, the most distressing part isn’t just the attack itself, but the fear of it happening again.

You may start avoiding certain places, situations or activities that feel risky. Over time, life can begin to shrink as you try to prevent another attack.

But panic attacks do not have to control your life.

Cognitive Hypnotherapy can help you understand what’s driving the pattern beneath the surface and gently support your mind in finding calmer, healthier responses.

How Cognitive Hypnotherapy Helps Panic Attacks

Panic attacks are often the result of the brain’s natural threat detection system becoming overly sensitive.

At some point, your unconscious mind learned to interpret certain situations or sensations as dangerous, even when they're not.

Once this protective pattern begins, your attention can become focused on your body and surroundings, constantly scanning for signs that another attack might be starting.

Ironically, the fear of another panic attack can become the very thing that triggers it.

Cognitive Hypnotherapy works with the unconscious mind – the part of the mind responsible for automatic emotional responses and behavioural patterns.

Through gentle, focused techniques, we can:

  • Identify the underlying triggers for your panic attacks

  • Calm the mind’s threat response

  • Change the way your brain interprets physical sensations

  • Reduce hyper-awareness of bodily signals

  • Release patterns of fear and avoidance

  • Restore a sense of calm, safety and control

Rather than simply managing symptoms, the aim is to resolve the root cause of the panic response.

Why Panic Attacks Can Feel So Frightening

If you’re experiencing panic attacks, you may recognise some of these patterns:

  • Feeling trapped in certain situations such as trains, planes, cars or lifts

  • Avoiding places like supermarkets, restaurants or crowded environments

  • Constantly checking your body for signs that another attack may be starting

  • Feeling anxious about leaving home or being far from an exit

  • Worrying about having a panic attack in public

  • Avoiding situations you once enjoyed

These reactions are very common. Once the mind associates certain places or sensations with danger, it begins trying to protect you by encouraging avoidance.

While this response is well-intentioned, it can gradually reinforce the fear cycle.

Cognitive Hypnotherapy helps gently interrupt that cycle so you can begin to feel safe again.

A Calm and Gentle Approach to Therapy

My sessions are calm, supportive and tailored to each individual person.

Hypnosis is simply a deeply relaxed and focused state, similar to being absorbed in a book or a film where your mind becomes fully engaged in the experience.

You remain aware and in control throughout the session.

We use a relaxed state of mind bec, it becomes easier to explore the unconscious patterns that are driving anxiety and panic responses, allowing us to gently update them.

Many clients find the experience deeply calming and reassuring.

Evidence-Based Cognitive Hypnotherapy

I use Cognitive Hypnotherapy because it is a modern, evidence-based therapeutic approach designed to create meaningful and lasting change.

Since 2011, I have been a member of the Quest Institute Research Team, which evaluates the effectiveness of Cognitive Hypnotherapy using outcome measures commonly used within the NHS.

A pilot study published in The Mental Health Review Journal found:

  • 71% improvement for anxiety and depression using Cognitive Hypnotherapy

  • Compared with 42% improvement for other talk therapies such as CBT

(Results based on a pilot study of 118 cases.)

While every person’s experience is unique, these findings highlight the effectiveness of a structured approach that works directly with unconscious patterns.

What Causes Panic Attacks?

There are many reasons why panic attacks can develop.

Sometimes they begin after a stressful or overwhelming life experience, while for others they may appear during periods of prolonged anxiety or pressure.

In some cases, the original cause may not even be obvious.

What matters most is that once the mind learns the panic response, it can continue repeating the pattern until the underlying triggers are addressed.

By gently exploring these triggers and updating the mind’s responses, it becomes possible to reduce or stop panic attacks altogether.

Client Success Stories - Panic Attacks

AJ Guildford, Surrey

“I would like to thank you for your help in our hypnotherapy sessions. Having suffered with my phobias since early childhood I am for the first time in my life feeling a lot more confident and feel like I have control of the situations that I very often find myself in on a day to day basis. At one time I would have just gone into “panic mode” but now I have the tools to deal with the situation. I do not have to think before I leave the house about where I am going and what I will encounter whilst there!! I feel much more positive about the way I am able to handle something that has worried me for years.”

SL Westminster London

“I went to see Laurie Harvey because I was having panic attacks. I had seen someone about these before but I was still getting them and I was becoming desperate. When I went to see Laurie she was very patient and understanding and I felt completely relaxed with her. She helped me to understand, why I was feeling the way I was and, after a few visits, I realised that I was getting fewer panic attacks and was feeling much happier and more able to cope with everyday things, which I had been struggling with before.”
