Help for Overthinking and Racing Thoughts

Overthinking feels mentally and physically exhausting.

Your mind may replay conversations long after they have happened, analyse decisions repeatedly, or become caught up in a stream of “what if…” thoughts about things that might go wrong. Even when you know these thoughts aren’t helpful, it can feel difficult to switch them off.

At my practice in Godalming, Surrey, I work with many clients who feel trapped in this pattern of constant thinking and mental overactivity.

Cognitive Hypnotherapy can help calm racing thoughts and gently change the unconscious patterns that keep the mind stuck in cycles of worry.
When Your Mind Won’t Slow Down
Everyone thinks things through from time to time. But when thinking turns into constant analysing, worrying or replaying events, it can start to affect daily life.

You might notice:

-
replaying conversations or situations in your mind
-
worrying about things that might go wrong
-
analysing decisions long after they’ve been made
-
struggling to relax because your mind feels constantly busy
-
lying awake at night with racing thoughts
-
feeling mentally drained from overthinking

For many people, the mind begins to treat thinking as a form of protection – constantly scanning for problems in an attempt to stay in control.
Unfortunately, this usually creates more stress rather than solving anything.

Why Overthinking Happens
Overthinking is often the mind’s attempt to manage uncertainty and avoid making mistakes.

It can develop from a number of experiences, including:

-
prolonged stress or anxiety
-
past situations where being highly alert felt necessary
-
perfectionism or high personal standards
-
fear of making the wrong decision
-
trying to solve emotional concerns purely through logic

Over time, the unconscious mind can learn to stay in a state of constant mental activity, believing that thinking harder will prevent problems.

But instead, this can create a cycle where the mind rarely gets the chance to rest.
Common Overthinking Thoughts
Many people who struggle with overthinking notice a constant stream of “what if…” thoughts running through their mind.

These thoughts often appear automatically and can feel difficult to control.

You might recognise thoughts such as:

-
What if I made the wrong decision?
-
What if something goes wrong?
-
What if I embarrass myself?
-
What if people judge me?
-
What if I should have handled that differently?
-
What if I forget something important?

Even small situations can trigger long periods of analysing, worrying or replaying events.

Although the mind often believes this thinking is helping to prevent problems, it usually leaves people feeling mentally exhausted, tense and unable to relax.

The good news is that these thinking patterns are learned habits of the mind, which means they can also be gently changed.
How Cognitive Hypnotherapy Can Help
Cognitive Hypnotherapy focuses on the unconscious patterns that drive thoughts and behaviours, rather than simply trying to suppress or control thinking.

Through our sessions, we work together to help your mind:

-
break the habit of constant mental analysing
-
feel calmer and more balanced
-
respond differently to uncertainty and worry
-
develop more helpful thinking patterns
-
experience greater mental quiet and clarity

Rather than fighting your thoughts, the aim is to help the mind learn new and more supportive ways of responding.

Many clients find that as these patterns shift, their thinking naturally becomes calmer and less overwhelming.
A Calm and Supportive Approach
My approach to therapy is thoughtful, gentle and tailored to each individual.

Since 2011, I have been a member of the Quest Institute Research Team, which uses outcome measures similar to those used within the NHS to evaluate the effectiveness of Cognitive Hypnotherapy.

The pilot study demonstrated effectiveness of 71% for anxiety and depression, compared with around 42% for other talk therapies such as CBT used within the NHS.

Sessions are designed to help you feel relaxed, understood and supported while working towards meaningful and lasting change.
Overthinking and Other Difficulties
Racing thoughts and overthinking are often closely connected with other challenges such as:

-
anxiety
-
panic attacks
-
sleep difficulties
-
low confidence

If these experiences resonate with you, you may also find it helpful to read about support for anxiety, panic attacks, or sleep problems.
Finding Calm Again
If your mind feels constantly busy or overwhelmed with thoughts, it is possible to experience more calm and clarity.

Cognitive Hypnotherapy can help you develop a healthier relationship with your thoughts so you can focus more easily, relax more deeply and feel more present in everyday life.
